In the 1970's, many states began Sunset laws as a way to hold state agencies to accountability. So how does all this work?
Agencies are given an expiration date that they will no longer exist or will sunset unless state legislators take action to continue the agency. Before this expiration date, the agency undergoes a review of his effectiveness, duties, and function.

Before the Sunset Advisory Panel starts their review process the agency does a self-evaluation and submits their findings as well as an overview of their mission and functions.
Not only can you share your insights and thoughts with the Sunset Advisory Panel, you can help make a difference. The Panel using the agencies self-review seeks input from various individuals. This lets TX real estate license renewal students have the opportunity to provide to share their thoughts. You can also view the agency's self-assessment on the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission website.
Once the Sunset staff has completed the review of the agency, they will compile and publish a report explaining any findings and recommendations arising from the review. The report will recommend the continuation of the agency as is, continuation with changes, or even potential elimination of the agency. A public meeting occurs to discuss the findings along with web-based town halls. This allows folks who can not physically attend the meetings to still provide input.
Lastly, a bill will be filed during the legislative session based on the finding of the Sunset Review Panel. For most agencies in TX, this process occurs every 12-years.
